When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best dental practice in Austin," the answer does not come from a ranked list of ten blue links. It comes from a model summarising what it has read about you. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making sure what it has read is accurate, current, and flattering.

How GEO differs from SEO

SEO earns a position. GEO earns a mention. The two overlap, but they reward different things:

  • SEO rewards relevance and authority against a query.
  • GEO rewards content that is easy to quote, attribute, and verify.

An AI assistant will not cite a page it cannot parse into a clean, standalone claim. That changes how you write.

Where to start

  1. Write citable claims. Short, factual sentences that survive being lifted out of context.
  2. Add structured data. Schema markup tells a model what kind of thing your page describes.
  3. Publish an llms.txt. A plain-text summary of who you are and what you offer.
  4. Get mentioned elsewhere. Models trust corroboration across sources more than your own claims.

Measuring it

Traditional rank tracking will not show you any of this. Ask the assistants directly, on a schedule, and record whether you were named, how you were described, and which sources were cited.
